Formula Kite Makes Olympic History at Paris 2024
Valentin Bontus becomes the first Olympic Formula Kite Champion
The Olympic Games Paris 2024 marked a historic milestone for the world of sailing. For the first time ever, Formula Kite Racing, often referred to as hydrofoil kite racing, was included in the Olympic sailing program. Combining cutting-edge hydrofoil technology with incredible speed and athleticism, the discipline delivered some of the most spectacular racing seen on the water.
Competing on the Mediterranean waters off Marseille, the world's best kite racers battled for a place in history, knowing they would become the first Olympic medalists in this exciting new discipline.
Austria's Valentin Bontus etched his name into the history books by winning the inaugural Olympic gold medal in the Men's Formula Kite event. Delivering an outstanding performance in the final series, Bontus demonstrated exceptional speed, consistency, and composure under pressure to secure the sport's first-ever Olympic title. The victory was particularly significant as it crowned the first Olympic champion of a discipline that represents the future of sailing. Racing at speeds exceeding 30 knots, Bontus mastered the challenging conditions in Marseille and delivered one of the standout performances of the Games.

Singapore's Maximilian Maeder also made history by claiming a remarkable bronze medal at just 17 years of age, becoming one of the youngest sailing medalists in Olympic history.
Eleanor Aldridge claims historic Gold for Great Britain
The women's competition produced its own historic moment as Eleanor "Ellie" Aldridge of Great Britain became the first-ever Olympic champion in Women's Formula Kite. Throughout the regatta, Aldridge showcased outstanding tactical awareness and consistency, ultimately defeating a highly competitive field to secure gold. Her victory not only secured Olympic glory but also established her as the first athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in Formula Kite competition.
France's Lauriane Nolot, racing in front of a home crowd, delivered an impressive performance to claim silver, while the Netherlands' Annelous Lammerts completed the podium with a well-deserved bronze medal.
