The first event of the 2017 Hydrofoil Pro Tour in La Ventana, Mexico is over. The tourstop was held over 4 days, from the 26th to the 29 March. 57 competitors from 23 countries have met up to race against each other, La Ventana is always the season opening event after the winter and is one of the most watched after kiteracing events, since a lot of testing and developing has been done by kiteboarding brands to come up with the fastest gear over the winter time.

The courses were created by race director Rob Dean, who has been the official race director of the Hydrofoil Pro Tour since 2014 and provides high level racing competition. The European riders started very strongly, showing they are on the forefront of hydrofoil racing. FLYSURFER kite developer, Benni Bölli, was also on the spot to support, help our team, trim and improve the development of FLYSURFER racing kites.

The event started of incredible for FLYSURFER, Olly Bridge (GBR) riding SONIC kites could score 4 bullets out of 5 races on the 1st day, and score another bullet on day nr.2, during these first days the wind was light to medium with 5-15 knots. FLYSURFER rider Florian Gruber also found his swing on our SONIC and placed consistently in the top 5, giving him a 5th place after day 2.

Then the event saw a dramatic change in winds on day 3 and 4, with winds going up until 30 knots, the riders needed to go into survival mode, grabbing some of their smallest kites and were flying around the race course. Veteran and current World Champion Maxime Nocher (FRA), very used to these conditions, could fight himself back to the top and take away the top podium spot from Olly Bridge, putting Olly in a safe 2nd place. Due to some bad luck, Florian Gruber also lost some places on the final day, in the end putting him in place 7. The level of the competition during this 1st HFPT stop was extremely high with all top racers from around the world attending creating a very strong fleet.

A special mention goes out to 17 year old Martin Dolenc from Croatia. Martin has been a long time FLYSURFER race teamrider and is training hard for many years to be on the top spots of regatta’s and Olympics. His consistent results made him win the under 18 class and put him in 3rd place in the under 21 class category!

Olly, Martin and Flo, you did a great job, we are very proud of you, congratulations!
